Responsible Play

The evening gaming room in our Winter Garden is a small amenity of the house, meant as a quiet way to pass part of an evening. It is not the reason to come to the Valdres pastures, and we ask every guest to treat it as light entertainment kept firmly in proportion to the rest of a stay.

1. Who may enter

Entry is for guests aged 18 and over. Our staff will ask for identification from anyone who looks under 25, and will decline entry to anyone who cannot show it. We would rather ask twice than let the policy slip. The room is for house guests and their invited company only.

2. Keeping play in proportion

Table stakes in the Winter Garden are kept modest, and the pace is unhurried by design. Play is meant to be sociable rather than serious. If an evening stops being enjoyable, the right move is simply to step away, the sauna, the tea salon and the long pasture light are all a few steps from the pavilion.

3. Setting your own limits before you sit down

Decide in advance how much time and how much money you are comfortable spending, and treat that decision as fixed once the evening begins. Never play with money set aside for other things, and never try to recover an earlier evening by playing longer. Money spent at play is the cost of the entertainment, not an investment expected to return.

4. Take breaks

Long unbroken sessions cloud judgement. Take regular breaks, keep an eye on the clock, and plan to finish at a reasonable hour so a stay stays restful. Our staff are happy to help you keep to the time you set yourself.

5. Signs to watch for

Play can stop being harmless when it starts to feel like a way to escape worry, when it takes time or money you meant for other parts of your life, or when you find yourself thinking about it away from the table. If any of that sounds familiar, it is worth pausing and, if needed, talking to someone.
